Beginning August 1, 2011 FMCC will no longer accept returned needles unless they are in an approved sharps container. Sharps are needles and are considered medical waste. Veterinary hospitals in the state of Virginia are held to the same standards as human hospitals. Virginia state law requires that all sharps generated or disposed of by a medical facility be disposed of in containers that meet industry standards. FMCC requires all needles turned in by clients to be in an acceptable disposal container. Approved sharps containers are available for purchase within the hospital. Approved containers can also be purchased at most pharmacies. To find out more about the laws governing sharps containers and to find out what acceptable containers are - click here.
